Description: In this class we’ll dip our toes into the world of Fair Isle knitting! We’ll look at choosing
colors, color dominance, stranding the yarn, and speed swatching in the round, and we’ll even do some steeking (cutting into our knitting)! We’ll be working with a tried-and-true product, 100% Shetland yarn, traditionally used for Fair Isle knitting. This class is intended as an introduction to Shetland wool and its suitability to stranded knitting. You can be a beginner or seasoned colorwork knitter. Note: you’ll be choosing and purchasing 6 balls of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift during the class.
Gudrun Johnston is a celebrated designer known for her modern yet timeless knitwear, beautifully rooted in her Shetland heritage. Her thoughtful colorwork, elegant constructions, and deep understanding of traditional techniques have made her designs beloved by knitters around the world. She frequently returns to Shetland where she loves spending time with her family in the Westside. In addition to Grand Shetland Adventure Knits, she is the author of The Shetland Trader Books One, Two and Three, and Knit With Me. Her newest book, Shetland Shades: Stories in Wool, was published with Laine on September 24, 2026.
Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills, including working in the round. Previous experience with stranded knitting is helpful, but not required.
Homework: None.

Materials to bring along:
- US4 or US3 24” circular needle (if you are a loose knitter use the smaller size needle)
- 2 stitch markers
- scissors
- You’ll be choosing and purchasing 6 balls of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift during the class. Our normal class discount (10% off) will apply.
