Toe-up Sock Workshop: “Utsubo Sock” by Chiharu Nagase

Teacher: Sammy Kay

Cost: $125

When: Thursdays, March 5, 19 & 26, 6:00–8:00pm

Description: Want to knit your first pair of socks? Having trouble making socks that fit? Learn to knit a charming pair of socks from the toes up! The Utsubo (“Moray Eel”) Sock, designed by Chiharu Nagase, is a great project for dipping your toes (sorry) into the world of sock making. In this hands-on class you’ll gain experience in small-circumference knitting and learn multiple techniques, including the toe-up cast-on and heel turn, increases and decreases, German short rows, and the i-cord bind-off. These socks use very little yarn and result in a comfortable, ankle-height set that you or a loved one is sure to enjoy!

Prerequisites: Participants should have basic knitting skills, including knitting in the round.

Homework: None.

Min/max number of participants: 4/8

Materials to bring along:

  • A copy (printed or digital) of the “Utsubo Sock” pattern by Chiharu Nagase (free download here)
  • At least 50 grams of fingering weight sock yarn, purchased from Spun
  • Size US1.5 needles (or size needed to meet gauge) in your choice of dpns, circular needles 32” or longer (for magic loop), or Flexi Flips. Note: 9” circular needles will not work for the cast-on, although you may switch to them after you’ve finished the toe.
  • 3 stitch markers
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Scissors or snips
  • Darning needle for finishing
