Spinning with Jillian Moreno: Plying for Texture

Description: Are you curious about art yarns? How about making yarns with layers of texture and color? Looking to make curls and loops, deep texture, or undulating swirls? In this class we’ll focus on using ply to create layered and textured yarns. We’ll learn to spin spirals, core spun, cable, and bouclé yarns. Topics will include: plying with uneven tension for spirals, how the right twists make a cable yarn pop, the secret to even and round loops for bouclé, and why the type of core for core spun yarn matters. We’ll start with the basics–fiber, prep, draft, and getting all the twists just right–and then we’ll add color for truly unique textured yarns!
Prerequisites: Advanced beginner. Students should be able to independently spin singles and make a two-ply yarn.

Materials to bring along:
- A wheel in good working order (i.e. you have spun on it recently)
- 3 bobbins
- A niddy noddy
- Tags to mark samples
- Baggies for fiber
- Pen and paper to take notes
- Any other spinning tools you like to use
- $25 materials fee, payable to Jillian (cash, check or Venmo/Paypal)
- Fiber will be provided by Jillian
Jillian Moreno is the author of the best-selling book Yarnitecture: A Knitter’s Guide to Spinning: Building Exactly the Yarn You Want. She is passionate about investigating the structure of yarn and color, and using them in intentional ways in knitting, stitching and weaving. In her classes, students play and experiment with fibers and color, gain an enthusiasm for sampling, and come to see that their own definition of beautiful, consistent, or perfect yarn is the only one that matters.
