Knitting Skills Workshop: Seaming with Mattress Stitch
Teacher: Mary Brandau
Cost: $50
When: Sunday March 9, 2:30–4:30
Description: Have you ever found a pattern you were dying to make, but resisted because it had seams? You might be missing out on a whole world of patterns! In this two-hour workshop with master knitter Mary Brandau, you’ll learn to start a mattress stitch seam using a figure-8 join. Then you’ll practice seaming stitches to stitches (vertical seaming), rows to rows (horizontal seaming), and stitches to rows (vertical to horizontal). You’ll also learn how to recognize the “dreaded 11s” when creating a beautiful shoulder seam. If there’s time, Mary will also cover seaming 1x1 and 2x2 ribbing, and weaving in ends.
Prerequisites: Participants should be able to complete the homework (below), which requires casting on, knitting, purling, binding off, and blocking your swatch.
Homework: You will need to bring six swatches to practice on. Make three of the swatches as follows: cast on 10 sts. Work in stockinette stitch (knit a row, purl a row) for 21 rows. Bind off and block. Now make the other three swatches as follows: cast on 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 11 rows. Bind off and block. You do not need to weave in the yarn tails.
Min/max number of participants: 4/10
Materials to bring along:
- 1 skein smooth, light-colored, worsted weight wool, purchased from Spun (we suggest Berroco Lanas)
- Your six swatches (see homework above)
- Darning needle
