Crochet A Market Bag! (“Granny Square Scrap Bag” by Salena Baca)
Teacher: Karen Lucas
Cost: $85
When: Wednesdays, July 16 & 30, 6:00–8:00pm
Description: Here’s a class for those who want to show off their granny square know-how and learn some new techniques while making a cute, colorful market bag. In this class you’ll learn to work in the round while shaping the bag and changing colors. Then you’ll learn how to make a stable handle. Last but definitely not least, you’ll make a cute tassel to finish everything off! Please note the prerequisites and homework: this class is for those who already have the skills to make a basic granny square.
Prerequisites: You must be comfortable with sc and dc crochet stitches and be able to make a basic granny square.
Homework: You’ll need to make a 10-round granny square in your chosen base color prior to class. (This is written out in the “Tote Base” section of the pattern.) Please note that it’s important to use a worsted-weight yarn and a hook that will give you a gauge of 7 rounds per 4” (size G is a good place to start). Measure your work after you have completed 7 rounds. If it isn’t 4” then start again with a different size hook (a smaller hook if your square too big, or a larger hook if your square is too small). The rest of the bag will go smoothly if this is right!!
Min/max number of participants: 5/8
Materials to bring along:
- 3–6 skeins Berroco Pima 100, 1 skein per color. You will use nearly a whole skein of the handle and stripe color (ivory in the sample), and you’ll have stripes in as many contrast colors as you choose.
- Size G crochet hook (or size needed to to achieve gauge; see homework).
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- A printed or digital copy of the pattern, available to purchase and download here.
