Gudrun Johnston’s Cut It Up: Conquer Steeking

Description: During this workshop we’ll look at the various methods used when steeking your knitting. Working from a swatch, we’ll primarily focus on the crocheted reinforcement method, but other methods will be discussed and demonstrated. If you’re brave enough, you can even try the Shetland method of no reinforcement! We’ll also cover picking up stitches from the cut edge and tidying up the frayed stitches. Gudrun will share examples of steeks on some of her finished garment designs. Some experience with stranded knitting is necessary for this class, as the homework will be a stranded swatch in Shetland wool.
Gudrun Johnston is a celebrated designer known for her modern yet timeless knitwear, beautifully rooted in her Shetland heritage. Her thoughtful colorwork, elegant constructions, and deep understanding of traditional techniques have made her designs beloved by knitters around the world. She frequently returns to Shetland where she loves spending time with her family in the Westside. In addition to Grand Shetland Adventure Knits, she is the author of The Shetland Trader Books One, Two and Three, and Knit With Me. Her newest book, Shetland Shades: Stories in Wool, was published with Laine on September 24, 2026.
Prerequisites: You must be able to complete the homework: a stranded colorwork swatch with two colors (charted only), with ends woven in and blocked.
Homework: You’ll need to knit a colorwork swatch (see prerequisites above). You’ll receive a link to download detailed instructions when you register.

Materials for homework:
- 2 balls of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift in contrasting colors (1 ball each color), purchased from Spun
- US4/3.5mm dpns or long circular needle for magic loop. If you prefer to go up or down a needle size when working colorwork please feel free to choose your appropriate needle size. Gauge (approx 27sts & 34 rounds per 4”) is not critical but your work should not be too loose.
- 4 stitch markers, including one unique BOR marker
Materials for class:
- your completed swatch
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- crochet hook in one size smaller than needle used for knitting swatch
- a few yards of smooth fingering weight yarn
- 16” knitting needle in one size smaller than used for swatch
- 25 yards extra yarn for working the picked up edging (same or different color as swatch)
