Spring Sweater Workshop: “Purl Strings,” by Heidi Kirrmaier

Teacher: Mary Brandau

Cost: $160

When:  Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 28 & June 11, 6:00–8:00pm

Description: Are you ready to knit a top-down yoke sweater? Heidi Kirrmaier’s Purl Strings, worked in a soft cotton-blend DK weight yarn, is a lovely three-season garment. The first class will begin with reviewing the pattern schematic, body measurements, and pattern options, and creating a gauge swatch. Techniques covered will include swatching in the round, measuring for gauge, an optional provisional cast-on, working increases and short rows, splitting for sleeves, finishing, and blocking.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with the knitting basics: casting on, knit and purl stitches, joining in the round, 1x1 rib, basic decreases (ssk and k2tog), and binding off.

Homework: Prior to the first class, you will need to make a swatch in the round. You will receive detailed instructions in your welcome email when you register. For the first class, you will also need to bring a favorite sweater to measure. A yoke sweater would be ideal, but any sweater will work.

Min/max number of participants: 4/8

Materials to bring along:

  • 680–2060 yards DK weight yarn, purchased from Spun (we recommend Fibre Co Luma)
  • 32” size US4 circular needles (or size necessary to achieve gauge)
  • Stitch markers
  • Crochet hook, if working crochet provisional cast on
  • Waste yarn for holding sleeve sts
  • A copy, printed or digital, of the “Purl Strings” pattern by Heidi Kirrmaier (purchase and download from Ravelry here)
