Spinning with Jillian Moreno: Spinning for a Project — How to Spin an Intentional Yarn
Teacher: Jillian Moreno
Cost: $125
When: Sunday, July 13, 9:00am–12:00pm
Description: How do you spin a yarn for a specific project? The key is knowing what you want and how to get there, and learning to love (or at least appreciate) sampling. In this class we’ll discuss and explore how each decision in the spinning process affects your finished yarn and your finished project. A few of the things we’ll discuss are:
- How to choose fiber and fiber blends
- How to draft for loft or density
- How to ply for stitch patterns
- What using a variegated fiber means for your stitch pattern
- How to kep yarn consistent through a project
- How to evaluate your yarn
- The elements of successful sampling
- How to sample quickly
- How to evaluate a knitting pattern in order to build a handspun yarn
- How to assess a commercial yarn to spin a match
From our in-class stash, you’ll choose a commercial fiber to work with to start sampling through draft, ply, color manipulation, and knitting to make the perfect yarn for a pattern of your choosing. You’ll learn the power of your default yarn, what and when to measure, and the secrets to keeping your yarn consistent throughout a project.
Prerequisites: If you can spin a continuous thread and have made a 2-ply yarn, even one time, this class is for you.
Homework: Please bring a pattern or project idea that you’d like to plan for.
Min/max number of participants: 4/12
