LeRoo Cotton Trunk Show

Please join Spun in welcoming Kathleen Sarkady from LeRoo Cotton! We suspect many of you are already familiar with Kathleen’s work: There’s just not a lot of hand-dyed cotton and vegan yarn out there, since non-animal-based fibers are notoriously difficult for hand-dyers to work with. So we were thrilled to find LeRoo a few years back, when Kathleen lived and worked in Tennessee. She was clearly performing some hand-dye miracles, the colors on her tricky bases deep and saturated, the resulting skeins full of color and personality. Since then some things have changed (Kathleen lives in Michigan now!), and some things haven’t (she’s still producing vibrant, high-quality work!). We are so happy to host her in person! Kathleen will be bringing her pretty vegan beauties (cotton! bamboo! more!) to Spun on August 13. She’ll be in the shop all day, from 9 to 6, and we will be celebrating with a day-long drop-in featuring a few vegan treats (while they last!) from our good friends at the Detroit Filling Station, along with drawings to win Spun gift cards. As always, this trunk show is free and open to all!

Spun Project of the Week

Pick up the kit, and we'll pay for the pattern

Zero Waste Shawl

Designed by Katarina Linnhagen and knit by Julie H. in Noro Yukata

Katarina Linnhagen’s asymmetrical Zero Waste Shawl is designed to use up almost every inch of your yarn! Knit on the bias in garter stitch with a delicate decorative edge along one side, this simple construction makes the most of Noro Yukata’s glorious shifting shades and excellent drape.

Julie H. notes that one of the reasons she chose this beauty for a shop sample is because it looked like a fun (and accessible) way to use up an enormous skein of yarn. "This is a very straightforward pattern. It was fun to watch Yukata's colors play out over the course of the whole project!"

New in the shop!

Coloring Book Raglan

Designed by Aimee Sher and knit by Julia in Brooklyn Tweed Tone

Aimee Sher's Coloring Book Raglan was inspired by a relaxed sweatshirt fit she recalled from her youth, and the resulting pattern offers multiple variations to tailor this piece to your liking, including different sleeve and body lengths. Julia notes that when searching for her next sample knit, "this stood out to me because of the pattern's promise that I could color in my own sweater, row by row, and make something that was uniquely my own. The complete and coherent instructions gave me the guidance I needed to make a fitted garment while allowing me the flexibility to add in stripes where I wanted them. Tones was the perfect choice for this sweater. The existing over/undertones in the same colorway made my color choices easy, and the crisp, plush, and slightly rustic texture on Tones let both the plain stockinette and the twisted rib details pop!"

The pattern is size-inclusive, and, given the range of options, we are happy (as always) to help you figure out how much yarn you'll need to make the version you want. Just call or stop by the shop, or drop us a line!

New colors of
Brooklyn Tweed Dapple

Say hello to three new colors of Dapple!

Verdigris is a malachite-bright oxidized green with a cool teal undertone. Periwinkle mixes up lilac, cornflower, and dove grey. Petal's blush pink is rose-delicate and sweetly saturated.

Dapple is a Spun favorite and a real gem, crafted of soft Colorado Merino (20.7 microns!) and equally soft organic Texas cotton. Each skein carries nuanced color and different marled and tonal effects, in hues ranging from dark to light, allowing each maker to craft their own palette within one colorway or among several. Fades and ombres are clear choices, and baby goods are clear choices, but don’t limit yourself! Have fun! Stop by to meet these colors in person and check out our latest Dapple sample knit.
