Sweater Workshop: “Strokkur” by Ysolda Teague

Teacher: Mary Brandau

Cost: $155

When: Tuesdays, September 12, October 10, 17, & 24, 6:00–8:00pm

Description: Looking for a more refined stranded-yoke pullover? Strokkur is worked from the bottom up with gentle waist shaping and a fairly short yoke to flatter your face and avoid bagginess under your arms. Short rows are worked above and below the colorwork for the slightly scooped neckline. Designed by Ysolda Teague, this worsted-weight pullover is a delightful straightforward knit.

The workshop will include a combination of lecture and practice, with plenty of time for questions and help. The first class will focus on pattern review, instructions, and tips. Then you’ll have time off to knit the body and sleeves. You’ll return in October for classes on joining the body and sleeves, reviewing stranded knitting techniques, working German short rows, joining underarm seams, weaving in ends, and blocking.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with the knitting basics: casting on, the knit and purl stitches, small-circumference knitting, basic decreases (SSK and K2tog) and increases (RLI and LLI), stranded knitting, and binding off. Stranded knitting skills will be reviewed but not taught in depth.

Homework: Prior to the first class, you will need to make a swatch in the round. You will receive detailed instructions in your welcome email when you register.

Min/max number of participants: 4/8

Materials to bring along:

  • 770–1485 yards worsted weight yarn in three colors, purchased from Spun (we suggested Brooklyn Tweed Shelter)
  • Size US7 circular needles (or size needed to achieve gauge): 16” (for gauge swatch & neck) plus a longer needle of appropriate length for the body circumference
  • Size US7 DPNs, or circulars for your preferred method of small circumference knitting in the rnd
  • A copy, digital or printed, of the “Strokkur” pattern (purchase and download on ravelry here)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking supplies
