Description: Is Sockland calling your name? Join us for an intensive and fun three-week sock-knitting workshop! Whether you’re new to socks, or you’ve tried and it never clicked, or you need a healthy refresher, you’ll come away with an in-depth understanding of sock construction.
In this workshop you’ll make top-down adult socks, worked in the round, using fingering-weight sock yarn and double-pointed needles (DPNs). Please note that while we’ll discuss other methods of sock knitting, the class will focus exclusively on the experience of knitting socks with four DPNs. Thus, all participants must have experience with DPNs.
In our first session you’ll cast on, learn to join that fiddly round, and start working on the leg of your sock. Our second session will focus on constructing the heel flap, turning the heel, and picking up the gusset stitches. Our third session will lead us through completing the toe and grafting the remaining stitches using the kitchener stitch. This is a fast-paced workshop requiring attendance at all three classes and a commitment to meeting the goals set for each session, including homework.
Prerequisites: This workshop is for ambitious advanced beginners and beyond. You must have previous experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles (e.g., working the crown of a hat).
Homework: There is no homework prior to the first class. However, extensive homework will be required between classes.
Min/max number of participants: 5/10
Materials to bring along:
- One set of size US2 double-pointed needles (DPNS), preferably wood or bamboo.
- One 100g skein of sock yarn, purchased from Spun. We suggest a commercial yarn such as Opal or West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4-Ply, rather than a hand-dye, which may be more slippery.
- A copy, printed or digital, of the pattern “#29 Classic Socks – Baby, Child & Adult Socks” by Melinda Goodfellow (purchase and download from Ravelry here).
